NFL Week 7 Picks

After getting blasted by underdog covers last week, I am going back to the well to make some week 7 picks. Here's what I like:

CHIEFS (+4.5) over Chargers
Patriots (-14.5) over Bucs
Colts (-13) over RAMS
Packers (-7) over BROWNS

Who do you like this week?

  1. I know I jinxed myself by saying this about the Raiders vs. the Eagles last week - but, seriously, could they make the Patriots or Colts lines big enough for you not to bet the favorites? Especially after Brady cremated the Jets 59-0 last week? My goodness.

If the Chargers can't win this game against the Chiefs convincingly, then they don't deserve to finish even 2nd in the AFC West. And they certainly don't deserve to keep their coach and their "super talented" labels. So I'm betting on us to save my sanity, or else I'm going straight for the $10 bottle of rum on Sunday.

  2. Bonus lines that intrigued me:

    Vikings (+4) over STEELERS
    DOLPHINS (+6.5) over Saints

I couldn't decide on either of these games because I feel like the result of both is going to expose something this week. Either the Vikings or Steelers are really good and aren't getting credit, or one of them is an illusion in the elite echelon of teams. I am voting it's the Vikings who are actually good and should win.

Also the Saints just beat the Giants in a titanic matchup and have the league's best offense by a mile. They're not even touchdown favorites against Miami? Either Miami is way better than their record indicates, or the Saints aren't getting enough respect here. I'd put money on the Saints on this one; the one thing I'm nervous about is a letdown after winning the Giants game.

  3. This feels like a week where I will do better overall than I do picking just five games. I'll go with Green Bay -9, San Diego -4.5, Indianapolis -13, New England -14.5, and Minnesota +4.5.

Again, this is picking against really bad teams, I actually have the least confidence in Green Bay to cream Cleveland. Minnesota and Pittsburgh just feels like a 3 point game to me. I think Pittsburgh is not as good as Baltimore and Minnesota was very close.

  4. Aaron what's your take on Dolphins-Saints? I'm perplexed

  5. It would not surprise me at all if the Dolphins can Wildcat their way to controlling the clock and get the upset. That being said, I was so impressed by how much the Saints were able to dominate a good Giants team that I will keep choosing the Saints - whatever.

  6. Well I went 4-for-4 on my picks this week; thank you to all the underdogs for rolling over. The Jets also smashed the Raiders after the Raiders won last week, bringing logic back to the world in the form of the "always bet against the Raiders" accepted wisdom.

I have questions in light of two games. One is the Saints-Dolphins... that game did not go like I expected. Drew Brees got beat up, but his team still scored 45, and the Dolphins were right there despite not really doing their clock control game plan. What is up with that?

The Cardinals beat the Giants in another surprising loss... so now the Giants have lost two straight to potential NFC playoff teams. After being written off early, the Cards are now back in action and could win the NFC West. How do you see this playing out with both teams?

  7. First, I looked through all your comments and couldn't figure out what your 'official' 4 picks were. The closest was choosing the Chiefs (+4.5) over the Chargers, then praising the Chargers via comments.

Second, the Saints continue to impress me. To win even without the greatest day by Drew Brees tells me two thing; first, this offense is very balanced and I continually harp on how a balanced offense is always dangerours, and two, the defense was able to play tough and stop the Dolphins even after being down by 21. The defense gave the Saints offense the opportunity to come back and win the game. Right now I'd say the Saints are the favorites to beat the Colts in the Super Bowl, and I don't think any other team is close to those two.

  8. As for the Cardinals-Giants, Arizona took a small step forward and New York took a small step back, but I would still say the Giants are a slightly better team. Without having seen the game, I would guess that Eli Manning had an off game (either due to pressure or individual failings) and the NY Giants will finish with a better record than the Cardinals. NY will still win the NFC East, while I am not as convinced the NFC West is the Cardinal's to lose.

  9. My official 4 were the 4 I put in the original post, and yes I chose the Chargers I just didn't feel like changing the wording of the pick. I think my choice of the Chargers was clear from my explanation.

I agree with you about the Saints... their defense has a lot of confidence which surprises me considering they give up a lot of points. But a defense that can keep you in a game and an offense that will outright win it seems a good combo - especially when Brees has an off game.
