Santa Monica Public Library
This here is in praise of the Santa Monica Public Library.
The interior is super nice and even includes a cafe. There is a lot of open space with desks and chairs to read, study, and work. It even contends with UCLA's Powell Library in terms of accessibility and reading spaces. (Although the chairs are nowhere NEAR as comfortable as the giant cushy ones in Powell that always make you nap in them when you're trying to study.) You know you're a pretty baller library when you have three separate branches in addition to the main library. The branches are on Montana, Ocean Park, and Main St. In addition to the extensive catalog of course. What about you, are there good prospects for a Good Will Hunting-style library education from your public library? Or do you do most of your reading at Barnes & Noble like Caitlin does?

I'm not even embarrassed that I just did an entire post about my local library. I'm also super proud that I used my first Read More insertion
ReplyDeleteI'm not proud of you not being able to size your photos correctly.
ReplyDeleteMy hometown library - the Belmont Public Library - was too anemic to provide a Good Will Hunting education, but being part of the larger San Mateo County Library system provided a large array of books I never read.
I didn't really start reading until mid-college (the book that started me off? none other than The Da Vinci Code). Now, my favorite place to read would be someplace where I can people watch while reading, as this allows me to combine my two great pastimes. I loved reading in random places on campus while at UCLA.
I'm a huge fan of librarires, and I sadly always come back to what my Senior Year English Teacher said: "Librarires are on the Endangered Species List. Everyone reads at Barnes & Noble now."
ReplyDeleteNow, I love B&N/Borders for the size of their stock and don't remember the last time I actually checked out a book from the library, but that doesn't mean I don't love the SF Public Library system. The main branch at Civic Center is a wonder and I don't doubt they don't have a book I'd want. Plus, there's a Chinatown branch right down the street from my apartment, and it smells like the gym where I played middle school basketball.
So, I've got that...which is nice.
My photos are too sized correctly! Wtf mate
ReplyDeleteAll I can tell you is that my library is most definitely not on the endangered species list. That place is poooopular
I edited your post to correct the size of your photos...
ReplyDeleteHow did you go about editing it? So I can do so in the future
ReplyDeleteSo you can update your Week 6 NFL Picks Column, you mean? :D
ReplyDeleteWithing the "Edit HTML" view of the post editor, change the width (and height to maintain original proportions, if desired) of the photo to be 575 pixels (or less).
The picks column picture looks fine? Maybe we have different viewing setups because I'm not having any problem
ReplyDeleteI'll change the dimensions nonetheless
Since moving to San Mateo, I have been checking books out from the library pretty regularly. I currently have three books checked out, which are due in January.
ReplyDeleteI usually go online to reserve a book (costs $0.50), and pick it up when I get a notification email. However, of the three libraries in the system I have visited, only Burlingame seems worthy of staying for any extended period of time. I usually just pick up the book and leave.
All three Malcolm Gladwell books and The World Is Flat by Thomas Friedman, which I have discussed on this blog, were all checked out from my local library.
ReplyDeleteI just checked out Shutter Island from the library yesterday and finished it by last night. A quick and entertaining read.
ReplyDeleteWARNING: If you're interested in the book OR the movie coming out, do NOT watch the Shutter Island trailer! I saw it before I read the book and even then I knew that it was spoiling wayyyy too much of the film. That trailer was the worst cut I think I've ever seen of any film trailer
Just read this mini-strip from XKCD (a favorite of mine to stroll through when bored at work), and amusingly thought of this post.
ReplyDeleteThe simple "Crap." at the end makes me giggle each time I read it (going on 10+ today - it's been an open tab in my browser for a while).
While this XKCD comic remains my all-time favorite. Jessica watches so many movies and TV shows at work, that even when I spend my lunch hour at home watching TV (today it was the WSOP, tomorrow, Mythbusters), she still watches more than me each week.
