Athlete Drinks

I was just introduced to the John Daly cocktail and the LeBomb James (below) in Bill Simmons' most recent mailbag. He suggests a drink for himself, a spicy bloody mary, but I think that's an awful choice.

What's a good drink for a Bill Simmons? What other athlete drinks can we come up with? Any that currently exist that are as good as the Daly or the LeBomb?

  1. I want to at least come up with a Kobe. There are a lot of directions that could go. Also between the Chargers fans we could probably do an LT, Merriman, or something...

  2. Ok, for a Bill Simmons, it needs to start out from the point of view of the fan, then once he realized he was too popular for that and actually known around the sports world, then he switched to being a fan who has all this access to athletes, and writers, and analysts, who still does whatever he wants and remains funny, but now has some insider access.

  3. Has a Pabst Blue Ribbon ever been considered a legitimate quality beer? If it is now considered a mainstream beer, and not just the cheapest beer that college students can buy in large quantities, I'd say something like that. But that's not a cocktail, and it already has a name.

Does vodka and red bull have a name? I feel like that would be a good fit...it kind of emerged as a new drink that bars didn't always have enough red bull, became really popular, but now is just a standard drink you can get at any bar.

  4. The more I think about it, the more I like it. As long as it doesn't have a name already that I'm forgetting.

Bill Simmons = vodka and red bull... he could even get sponsored by his favorite vodka and Red Bull!!

  5. @sportsguy33 BS: vodka & Red Bull started out as a new, cool, really good drink, but now it's just a standard, ordinary really good drink.

  6. For Kobe...I'm thinking Grey Goose straight out of the freezer. It's ice-cold, great vodka, but liquor snobs say you should never put it in the freezer because that detracts from the taste. So, this ice cold liquor could be the best, but it's just a little off.

  7. Yes I strongly agree with you. And made with good vodka or just the right proportions of Red Bull (or maybe a third mystery ingredient) it can occasionally hit a home run.

In the meantime, you will find a bar that doesn't have Red Bull and it will piss you off, like you said. Just like when Simmons doesn't post a column for 5 weeks.

  8. Last comment was about a Simbo (is that a better or worse name than calling it a Simmons or a Bill Simmons? or a LaBill Simmons, for long-time readers?).

Ha I like your explanation of the Kobe, though you'd have to keep a freezer vodka all the time just to be ready. Plus I was intrigued by working Black Mamba into it somehow. Or make it a drink that can be very good or very bad based on preparation - i.e. it's fickle, just like Kobe.

  9. how many black alcohols are there? The only one I can think of is Jager...but I feel like Kobe is better than Yager.

  10. You could use blackcurrant juice or liquuer like in a snakebite (an English drink). In fact maybe I can iterate on the snakebite since it's already got the snake thing going on... any ideas?

  11. Describe a Snakebite...ut I think you're on the right track. Could you add ice cold vodka to a Snakebite?
