USC vs. OSU - Meet you at the Theater?

Just read this article about how ESPN plans to show the USC/OSU game in 3D this year to select theater audiences. So, I ask you this: would you be willing to watch a game in a movie theater just to see it in 3D?

  1. I, personally, think it would be awkward to watch a game in a theater. But, I also see the positives that would come out of a 3D broadcast, so I would definitely try it out at least once just for the experience. Then, I'd determine my future viewing habits based on how well I enjoyed it the first go around.

I hope they set up cameras on player's helmets next so that we can get the 3D view of what it's like to have to hang in the pocket long enough to get hit, just so I can allow my receiver the time to complete his route. That my friends would be OOOO-some!

  2. From what I've heard, everything about 3D and watching games in theaters is definitely the wave of the future. Watching sports is a VERY social activity. Theaters will eventually be selling beers and snacks, just like the stadium, you get to hang out with a crowd of fans of your team, but you are only spending $10-15 on a ticket instead of $50-150. You get the better viewing experience TV provides, instant replay, highlights from other games, multiple close camera angles, while gaining the social environment not always possible at home. It's more fun than watching from home and less expensive than tailgating and going to the game.

  3. Now, I would never go see the U$C-OSU game...but I would love to go see a Chargers game with other Chargers fans up here in the Bay Area.

  4. Wait wait wait - are they serving beer at this event? That's the only way it becomes acceptable.

I would be down to see a 3D broadcast, though I'm not 100% sure what that is going to add to the game form the traditional camera angles? I COMPLETELY agree with your second paragraph - if they incorporate some new viewpoints, especially in 3D, then I am so in.

  5. I don't know that they are serving beer at this specific event...but as the experience progresses, the goal is to combine all the best parts of being at the stadium and watching from home. Beer is necessary for both of those.

  6. Aaron I completely agree with your utopian future of sporting events in theaters, with beer and *good* food (not crazy-overpriced hot dogs that suck) also served.

I'm concerned about the seating style though. Getting up and moving across a row of people would kind of suck. And you know you'd want to get food delivered to you like you would at a sports bar. How to overcome these troubles?

  7. Eh - you move across a row of people at a game; this is no different. Perhaps foot space between rows might be widened to allow for easier passage, but I don't think it's as big an issue as you think. Besides, with all the downtime b/n quarters/plays, you'd have natural breaks to get up and grab food, or head to the bathroom.
