Wet Wednesday: Downtown Brown by The Lost Coast Brewery

I'm sneaking this in without confirmation from our more knowledgeable beer drinkers here at FIWK, but since I hadn't seen a Beer Wednesday post, I thought I'd toss my hat into the ring. I'm keeping this short cause, as I've said before, my taste buds aren't the most powerful in the world. I picked up a 6-pack of The Lost Coast's Downtown Brown, and really enjoyed it - the one word that comes to mind immediately is 'smooth'. I'm this close to bumping it above out benchmark brown (Newcastle) - your thoughts?

  1. First, being the benchmark, doesn't mean it's the best. I think many microbreweries are capable of producing a better brown than Newcastle, but we use Newcastle as our comparison so that other people who probably haven't tried your beer can understand what you're saying when comparing to something they have tried before.

  2. Second, did you take that picture? Because that seems like it has a lot of head and is pretty dark for a Brown.

But I do love frosty mugs...helps keep the beer cold longer. Which is important, because good beers should be savored, not chugged.

  3. Nope - found the picture online.

Have you had their Brown, yet? Have you had anything from Lost Coast?

  4. Aaron have you had the Downtown Brown? Did you have actual comments?

I'm a big fan of Downtown Brown and of Lost Coast. They also do a Raspberry Brown Ale which I enjoy.

The Downtown is very smooth as Scott says, I put it in that Newcastle/ Alaskan Amber category. It has a certainly roasty, malty flavor and a nutty flavor beyond a Newcastle, which for me is a big plus. I'd also say the body of the beer is heavier than a Newcastle. It's still what I would call medium bodied.

Overall Downtown Brown is right up my alley. Scott how much was it for a 6-pack?

  5. Just had my 3rd, and it's still surprisingly smooth.

    I believe I picked it up or $8 or $9 a Safeway (+/- $3)

  6. That could have been funnier if "Just had my 3rd" was posted like 6 minutes after the original post

  7. Would that be funnier because he drank 3 beers in six minutes? Or that he drank three beers before 8:33am?

  8. Both, although 3 in six minutes was my primary angle

Because our tasting with you was such a big hit Aaron, we are reprising the event but doing Pinot Noir wines this time. It's tomorrow. Um, you're all invited?
