Music Tuesdays - Get By by Talib Kweli

Joining us this week is Caitlin McCabe (aka C-Mac) with I Need a Dolla by Aloe Blacc. I like her song more than mine, actually.

Also, Aaron recommends a St. Patrick's day choice after the fact, because we did not dutifully honor said holiday last week. So here's Drunken Lullabies by Flogging Molly:

  1. oooh, nice pic. We both went with some beats this week! Also, we both went with the "trying to get by theme" hmmmmmm

  2. I like it. I'm going to renew your five song grace period. In fact, I liked it enough, I'm going to extend it to 8 songs. Not the greatest compliment I can give, but a pretty good one none the less.

  3. Umm...way to mix up the source sample for some of your favorites, Royce.

I think I enjoy "Get By" more as "I need a Dolla" is a bit too repetitive. I do enjoy them both, however, and will rate them as follows:

    Get By: 4/5 Happy Faces

    I Need a Dolla: 3/5 Happy Faces

  4. Aaron, you honor me.

C-Mac you're right, same theme. And we didn't even plan it!

Damn Scott, I didn't even realize that... now I look like a sucker. But whatever I don't even care, this song rocks. And I reserve the right to use future songs from commercials, because I have a recent one in mind.

Or we could hold yet another commercial throwdown.

  5. I'm a fan of another commercial throwdown - I've got a couple ready to be used...

  6. Good ears Scott! I remember thinking I really like the piano part of the song...I guess our previous discussion includes everything I like about that song.

  7. After listening to it a few more times, I think this is the most uplifting rap song I have ever heard. It's not about poverty and drugs or about a millionaire partying with his ho's (although my enjoyment of different songs tends to be independent of the message, whether positive or negative). I like the message of love and appealing to the vast majority of Americans who are working hard to find love and just get by. It's not about alcohol or drugs or disrespect.

You know what...I'm gonna add two extra songs and make it a 10 song grace period because I like this song more and more. Kudos to Royce!

  8. A bonus track for you, if you dig the beat and wanted more MCs then the remix has you covered... featuring Mos Def, Jay-Z, Kanye, and Busta Rhymes... it also has two new verses by Kweli... all in all about double the rhymes

  9. Is it weird that every time I hear the Jay-Z verse from the "Get By" remix it makes me think of MP? Especially the part where he says:

Doin' five dollars worth of work just to get a dime
    So pardon my disposition
Why should I listen to a system that never listened to me?

Strange no? I must imagine him as feisty.
