Tech Thursday: Robot Cars!

Last week we talked briefly about computers that could read (well, we more talked about how surprised we were by the "blockbuster-ness" of some recent movies, and that MP is an idiot). Six months ago we talked about towel-folding robots. In between, we talked about a lot of other things. This week, we'll continue the robotics theme with Robot Cars! Monday saw Google unveil their self-driving car, which has driven an amazing "140,000 miles with only occasional human control." (1K with no human control). Not to be outdone, Germany's Freie University unveiled their self-driving taxi this morning. No word yet how many miles it's driven, but the video in the link is pretty awesome.

  2. Dude, check out this Business Week slideshow of "the world's most advanced robots" - easily the most bad ass slideshow of all time. Some of those robots are ridiculously advanced. I am borderline nervous.

  3. There's no way you saw that first picture and didn't immediately think of Star Wars walkers.

  4. Great find Royce!

I love the ingenious engineering behind how this robot runs.

  5. Anyone else feel a bit bad for BigDog when he was slipping on the black ice? I sure did.

Also - I found it interesting that we're building these robots with other robots. We're inching closer to being owned by robots!

  6. It was also slightly unfortunate when he had to go face first down the hill...oh, and when he got kicked in the side...that wasn't nice either.

Although, I was very impressed by how quickly the legs recovered when falling or slipping.

  7. The recovery time was pretty impressive. Haha it's true, I did feel kinda bad for it... the dog name might be lending to that, not really sure.

Star Wars AT-AT is definitely the first thing I thought of. I was looking for Luke to round that bitch up with a cable around the legs and bring it down. Which I think would also be animal cruelty.
